I am a nurse consultant in liaison psychiatry employed by the South West London & St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust, based at St George’s Hospital in London. My clinical role is complemented by my work as a principal lecturer in mental health for Kingston University & St George’s Hospital Medical School. As part of my role as nurse consultant, I chair the London Liaison Mental Health Nurses’ Forum and am also chair of the Association of Nurse Consultants. I am the only mental health nurse on the editorial board at the Nursing Times, Britain’s biggest circulation nursing journal.
Research work includes the study of decision-making by nurses working in liaison psychiatry, learning approaches and outcomes used in clinical simulations with student nurses and the mental health care of patients in Emergency Departments.
I am the author of numerous articles, book chapters and have published two books, ‘Behind the Mask’ (Bailliere Tindall) in 1994 and ‘Nurses and Politics: the Impact of Power and Practice’ (Palgrave Macmillan), published in late 2003. I am co-editor of ‘Mental Health Care for Nurses: Applying Health Skills in the General Hospital’ published by Blackwell in 2006.
