APNA will:

  • Develop strategic alliances, coalitions and relationships with a variety of public, private, and not-for-profit organizations to advance psychiatric-mental health nursing.
  • Maintain personalized relationships with key decision-makers in government, NGO and other professional healthcare organizations.
  • Build a strong strategic position and recognition as a leader in psychiatric-mental health nursing.
  • Develop positions on key issues of interests and importance to psychiatric-mental health nursing.
  • Become branded for being a powerful advocate and voice for transforming the profession and mental health and substance use disorders.
  • Have collaborative relationships with consumers groups who can help guide advances in recovery focused assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of persons with mental illness and substance use disorders.

In order to fulfill this commitment APNA must:

  • Be viewed as a credible resource of valuable, research based information on psychiatric-mental health nursing, mental health, and substance use disorders.
  • Position the APNA as the spokesperson and visionary concerning the future of psychiatric-mental health nursing.
  • Develop strong research and data gathering of member needs and programs to inform APNA decisions.
  • Understand views of other key mental health and substance use disorders stakeholders.
  • Have recognized expertise in recovery focused assessment, diagnosis, treatment, recovery and evaluation of persons with mental illness and substance use disorders.
