Secretary's Report

The APNA Secretary is responsible for corporate records and taking meeting minutes during official meetings of the APNA Board of Directors. During the past year, the Board of Directors conducted face-to-face meetings on October 6, 2009, February 18-19, 2010, and June 23-24, 2010. Conference calls were held on November 11, 2009, December 8, 2009, April 13, 2010, May 11, 2010, June 8, 2010, July 13, 2010, August 10, 2010 and September 14, 2010.

Membership has increased since the last activity report. There are currently 6,975 members compared to last year’s total of 6,492. From October 1, 2009 through September 30, 2010 a total of 1,733 nurses joined APNA.

During the past year, the website has continued to help APNA serve as your resource for psychiatric mental health nursing. Page views and visits to the site are both up 35%, while unique page views are up almost 39%. Visitors are spending more time on the site and viewing more pages per visit than ever before. For more details on the website’s top content, top traffic sources, etc., see the full report in the Appendix E.

In addition to the success of our personal website, APNA has developed a stronger overall web presence, with higher spots in search engines, more referrals, active social networking sites, and a Wikipedia webpage.

The development and expansion of our members-only networking site Member Bridge has enabled increased participation in blogs and discussions, while fostering member relations. More than 2,500 eGroup posts have been written in over 95 communities. In the All-Purpose Discussion Forum alone, 7,116 subscribers have posted over 1,000 replies and more than 30 shared documents. Through this forum, APNA committees are also able to learn what topics are important to the membership and further their work in those areas.

Members-only networking has not been the only focus in our networking web presence. Our Facebook page has also been re-ignited and is now better than ever. With about 3 posts per week, APNA’s “Question of the Day” has become a must-read post, eliciting anywhere from 6 to 25 responses posted onto our page. This “Question of the Day” is taken from the more active discussions on Member Bridge’s All Purpose Discussion Forum. For more detailed statistics on the use of Member Bridge and our other social networking sites, see the full report in Appendix F.

We continue to reach the membership through as many communication avenues as possible. Online, email announcements, e-newsletters, and postings on APNA websites have kept our members up to speed on psychiatric mental health news and APNA events. In print, conference brochures, newsletters, and postcards have alerted members of important happenings.

It is an honor to serve as Secretary.

Respectfully submitted,

Diane M. Wieland, PhD, RN, PMHCNS-BC
