The Board of Trustees welcomed three new board members in 2013: Richard Pessagno, Marlene Nadler-Moodie, and Michael Rice.  The Board met via conference calls held on February 13, 2013 and May 13, 2013.

Towards its focus on preserving the past, the APNF is working to gather the perspectives and memories of psychiatric mental health nursing icons. Through the APNF's Living the History of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing video series, two icons thus far have shared their perspectives and memories on film.  In 2012 Grayce Sills, PhD, RN, FAAN was interviewed by APNA member Jeanne Clement, EdD, APRN, PMHCNS- BC, FAAN and this year the Foundation was pleased to add another video to the series: Shirley Smoyak, RN, PhD, FAAN, as interviewed by Teena McGuinness, PhD, CRNP, FAAN. This video was premiered during a special APNF presentation on October 10, 2013 at the APNA 27th Annual Conference in San Antonio, Texas. The filmed interview of Grayce Sills is now available to view on the APNA website and YouTube in an effort to further disseminate the valuable information about the PMH nursing profession that it contains. The APNF plans to continue expanding the Living the History video series in the upcoming year. Suggestions for whom to feature will be solicited from the APNA membership. The Foundation plans to debut this upcoming film at the APNA 28th Annual Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana in October of 2014.

The APNF Dime-a-Day Fundraising Campaign: Ensuring the Future while Preserving our Past, which began in 2012, continues. Those who donate $36.50 or more to the Foundation receive a DVD copy of the Shirley Smoyak video in addition to a donor pin. Those who donate at the gold ($365) or platinum ($3,650.00) levels receive DVD copies of the Shirley Smoyak video and the Grayce Sills video, as well as a donor pin. In tandem with the continued expansion of the Living the History video series, the APNF plans to offer a DVD copy of next year’s video to donors who donate after its premiere at the APNA 28th Annual Conference. The funds raised from this campaign are used to fund the Foundation’s Research Grants program.

Through its Research Grants program, the American Psychiatric Nursing Foundation works to advance the future of the profession by aiding scientific research and contributions which add to the knowledge and practice of psychiatric-mental health nursing. A call for research proposals was issued on December 14, 2012 and the call closed on February 18, 2013. The 2013 APNF Grant Review Committee conducted a blind peer review of the research proposals. The Foundation provided assistance to the two researchers whose applications were rated the highest: Each received a $5,000 grant and a complimentary registration to the APNA 27th Annual Conference.
