Implementation of the Consensus Model for APRN Regulation: Licensure, Accreditation, Certification and Education
APNA has endorsed the Consensus Model (CM) for APRN Regulation, which outlines a future plan for all of advanced practice nursing. The advantage of the CM is that it will provide greater consistency in licensure, accreditation, certification and education (LACE). We believe that this consistency will benefit advanced practice registered nurses in psychiatric-mental health (APRN-PMH) and, ultimately, the people whom we serve.

	Mission Statement
It is the mission of the APNA RN-PMH Council to identify issues, gather pertinent information to better understand these issues, and develop recommendations to the Board of Directors on projects or positions that APNA should undertake.

	Goals
To represent the identity and voice of the Psychiatric Mental Health Staff Nurse, the RN-PMH Council will:

Implement the processes and procedures necessary to carry out the role, mission and vision of the Council

Establish Council project priorities based on the survey of psychiatric nurses conducted earlier this year

Establish a Steering Committee to organize and facilitate the work necessary to address targeted priorities

Establish Working Committees and identify Expert Panel members, as necessary, to work on specific priorities

Work collaboratively with the other APNA Councils and as part of the Inner Council Task Force to represent the RN-PMH

Identify and submit RN-PMH Council Members for consideration and membership on the APNA Rapid Response Team

Tobacco Dependence: Failure to Act = Harm

The time to act is now. The American Psychiatric Nurses Association formed a Tobacco Dependence Task Force (now a Council), held a summit, created a partnership with the Smoking Cessation Leadership Center and set a target to increase by 5% every year the 61% of psychiatric nurses surveyed who refer (assist) smokers to treatment and the 29% who provide an intensive intervention.

Institutes

An institute provides direct input to the Board of Directors through the Office of the President on an assigned psychiatric-mental health nursing issue that spans virtually all aspects of the profession. It is similar to a task force except that its mission may require several years to complete, while a task force generally completes its work in about a year. The purpose of an institute is to utilize membership expertise in the development of programs and services aimed at addressing the institute's main focus through a series of chaired workgroups.
