Mission Statement
It is the mission of the APNA RN-PMH Council to identify issues, gather pertinent information to better understand these issues, and develop recommendations to the Board of Directors on projects or positions that APNA should undertake.

To represent the identity and voice of the Psychiatric Mental Health Staff Nurse, the RN-PMH Council will:

  1. implement the processes and procedures necessary to carry out the role, mission and vision of the Council,
  2. establish Council project priorities based on the survey of psychiatric nurses conducted earlier this year,
  3. establish a Steering Committee to organize and facilitate the work necessary to address targeted priorities,
  4. establish Working Committees and identify Expert Panel members, as necessary, to work on specific priorities,
  5. work collaboratively with the other APNA Councils and as part of the Inter Council Task Force to represent the RN-PMH, and
  6. identify and submit RN-PMH Council Members for consideration and membership on the APNA Rapid Response Team.

The APNA-RN-PMH Council continues to work on the production of the Sleep Hygiene Toolkit. We have run into a few challenges in securing approval from various authors but we are confident we will be able to complete the toolkit.

Members of the council participated in collaboration with the Administrative Council to produce the upcoming staffing paper.

In response to and as a result of the dialogue from the staffing paper work, the Steering Committee has begun work on a staffing questionnaire. We hope to open up dialogue with staff nurses in response to questions left unanswered by the staffing paper. It is clear there isn’t enough research and information available specific to psychiatric units staffing needs and we wish to query our membership on their opinions.

We continue to look for ways to make the scope and standards of practice for PMH nurses a living document to staff nurses and are planning on launching a monthly discussion via member bridge on segments of the scope and standards as it pertains to the psych staff nurse. Our first foray into the Scope and Standards was to develop a handout of sorts but licensing and copyright infringement issues prevented us from pursuing that venue.

Challenges remain keeping a volunteer workforce engaged for the long haul. Scheduling meetings when members span 4 time zones and difficulty with individual and group follow through. As often is the case, the bulk of the work is completed by just a few individuals. We continue to look for ways to avoid this and any help or guidance from APNA leadership on engagement and consistency in groups such as ours would be appreciated.

Mission Statement
It is the mission of the APNA Tobacco Dependence Council to facilitate collaboration and communication among psychiatric mental health nurses by serving as a clinical resource in achieving shared goals, and to assist in the use of evidence-based practices and innovative systems for exceptional patient care as it relates to tobacco dependence.

To continue the work toward achieving the goals set out by the Tobacco Dependence Task Force with increasing by 5% every year the 61% of psychiatric nurses surveyed who refer (assist) smokers to treatment and the 29% who provide the intensive intervention. The group developed an action plan to accomplish this goal and will periodically monitor the progress in tobacco reduction.

Recent activity:
2 Council conference calls
2010 annual conference: pre-conference workshop; interactive panel
2011 CPI presentation
