President's Message: Shine a Light on It! Recently, the profile of mental illness and mental health treatment have been advanced through professional journals, list-serve feeds, The Affordable Care Act, the President’s National Conference on Mental Health, Veterans’ Mental Health needs, and even the high profile debates about the DSM-5. The progress in the ways health care providers perceive and respond to the mental health needs of patients is encouraging. (Cont'd)

Member Profile: Joseph Holshoe on Sleep & Antidepressants  "There are many misconceptions about antidepressants and sleep," says Joseph Holshoe, MSN, PMHNP-BC, a Commander in the US Public Health Service and a Behavioral Health Consultant at the Naval health Center New England. "Many 'sedating' antidepressants disrupt and impair sleep and the sedating effects we desire may come from broken and ineffective sleep architecture." (Cont'd)

We are therefore proud to be helping 13 psychiatric-mental health nurses implement their grassroots smoking cessation initiatives through the Virtual Nursing Academy of APNA Champions for Smoking Cessation. These nurses, both RNs and APRNs who work in a variety of settings, will each receive a $1,000 honorarium, support in an online community, and complimentary registration to the APNA 28th Annual Conference. After implementation, the programs’ strategies and evaluation results will be disseminated through APNA continuing education programs and publications - so stay tuned! Learn More

Recovery Pearl: Self Awareness Reflections - By Connie Noll MA, BSN, RN-BC & brought to you by the APNA Recovery Council
Mirror, mirror, to be fair;
Am I ready for who’s out there?
Genuine, authentic, fully present, sincere
Can I coach them through their fear?
Am I ready to engage, connect, and empathize?
Can I really imagine life through their eyes?
Can I get past my own feelings, distractions, and noise?
Do I truly have something to give, unassuming, and with poise?
Will I preach, coerce, lecture, or rule?
Or let self-empowerment be their tool?
