Jill's Psych Nursing Story
This month, Jill Bormann, PhD, RN, APRN-BC, CNS shares a glimpse into what motivates her as a psychiatric-mental health nurse research scientist:
I have always been interested in spirituality and health. As a psychiatric nurse, I wanted to find a way to incorporate the "power within us" to help promote health and wellbeing in patients. After meeting a spiritual teacher, Sri Eknath Easwaran, in 1988 who introduced me to "mantram repetition," I found that repeating a sacred word or phrase, silently to myself, throughout the day (or night), was an effective and practical way to quiet my mind and calm myself.

Over time, I discovered this practice gave me a sense of peace and a realization that "everything will be okay" no matter what happens. Fast forward to 2015: I am conducting randomized clinical trials to test the effects of the Mantram Repetition Program compared to an active control, Present Centered Therapy, in veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The results are unbelievable. I am in awe of the stories of how this simple practice has helped veterans overcome anger, road rage, irritability, insomnia, and improve their relationships with loved ones. Being a psychiatric nurse and research scientist has given me this valuable opportunity to work with a variety of veterans and hopefully, make a difference.
