Dear Colleagues,

The past few months have seen many national and international critical events along with a seemingly endless flurry of accompanying news cycles. In the midst of all of this, I want to remind you of something: you have a supportive community right here. Remember, whole health begins with mental health! Your network is here to help you (and vice versa) as we all encounter the stressors and changes in the world around us. Practice self-care and reach out when you need help, encouragement, or advice.

" I have come to appreciate how deep and powerful the connections and collective knowledge within this community of psychiatric-mental health nurses run."

As I write this final President’s Message, I find myself reflecting on the journey we have taken this year.  We set out to shift the paradigm of how health is defined – transforming its meaning to one where mental health is seen as a foundation for wellness. Throughout this journey I have come to appreciate how deep and powerful the connections and collective knowledge within this community of psychiatric-mental health nurses run. The threads that knit us together as a compassionate community of like-minded nurses are strong and enduring.

For example….

Have you seen the discussion on the All-Purpose Discussion Forum where a member who just got a new job as a clinical instructor asked for tips? The generous outpouring of advice and ideas illustrates how supportive we are. Or how about this month’s Free CE? The range of topics presented by members of our profession in these podcasts reflects how diverse we are. What about these profiles of the 2017 APNA Annual Awards Recipients? Their inspiring work showcases the ingenuity and dedication in all of us.

Nothing better illustrates the breadth of knowledge within our community than the APNA Annual Conference program each year.  Want to see the newest PMH nursing innovations delivering better outcomes for our patients? Check out the Annual Conference program. Want to understand the most pressing issues facing our profession? Check out the conference program. Want to see what nurses can accomplish when they come together and share their expertise? Check out the conference program.

Finally, I want to bring you back to how I started this message: In a rapidly changing world where we find ourselves navigating new paths each day, please always feel empowered to reach out to your association of colleagues to ask for and to lend support and expertise. Together, we are a powerful group who can make a meaningful impact on how we as a society view mental health and its role in wellness.
