Costco Connection Outreach

APNA members engaged in an email writing campaign this past February which was aimed at an article published in January edition of The Costco Connection. While the article, More Than the Blues: How to Get The Depression Help You Need, served the purpose of raising awareness around issues of mental health, it did so at the expense of giving an accurate view of providers qualified to provide psychiatric-mental health care. APNA members used this as an opportunity to educate a publication with a circulation of more than 12 million Costco members about the the high quality psychiatric-mental health care consumers receive from providers such as psychiatric-mental health nurses. The main points communicated were these:

  • Psychiatric-Mental Health Advanced Practice Nurses have graduate-level training in assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health disorders, including depression.
  • They have specialized training in counseling and psychotherapy and the most current knowledge of medications which may be needed to treat depression.
  • The majority of psychiatric-mental health advanced practice nurses also have prescriptive authority.
  • Psychiatric-Mental Health Advance Practice Nurses are often the only providers of psychiatric care in rural and underserved areas.

Your emails made an impact. In the March 2018 edition of The Costco Connection, APNA member Cindy Campbell's letter was published in their Member Feedback section. APNA sent the managing editor a letter thanking the publication for including that letter, and also requesting that a follow up article that gives a more balanced and accurate view of psychiatric-mental health providers be published. The managing editor responded that they will keep the above points in mind if they do additional stories on mental health issues.

If you have ideas for stories highlighting psychiatric-mental health nursing/nurses that would be appropriate to suggest to this publication, as well as others, please email them to us at
