Introduction Active participation by psychiatrists in efforts to understand and care for persons with mental retardation is long-standing. In the mid-nineteenth century, many of the pioneers of educational efforts and humane treatment were psychiatrists. The first medically oriented journal devoted to the subject, Observations on Cretinism , was published by a prominent psychiatrist, Wilhelm Greisinger, in 1850, while the precursor to the American Association on Mental Retardation was founded in 1876 by six psychiatrists. Lamentably, in the first half of this century, the role of psychiatrists was reduced to that of custodial gatekeeper of large residential ...

Nurses have long been engaged in influencing healthcare through policy. Although when considering the number of nurses, the profession is sadly underrepresented. I realized this in 2014 while developing a personal knowledge base for suicide prevention and searching for policy-making entities in a Western state. The state-level department directing policy development and implementation strategies developed a 2015-2018 Behavioral Health Strategic Plan (Do not get me started on that label “Behavioral Health”). The eighteen-member workgroup included a wide range of disciplines primarily administrators, three physicians, two attorneys, and a patient advocate. ...

Nurses have opinions and are unhesitant about sharing them. To be a nurse requires an elevated level of clinical and emotional intelligence together with strong internal motivation, which is expressed through advocacy for injustice and the protection of the vulnerable. While some may restrain the practice of nursing in the hospital and other clinical environments, the power of nursing must also be exerted to influence healthcare policy if there is any hope of reform. Although this notion is not new, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) found that for various reasons, the nursing profession was simply not performing to its full capacity as a keystone discipline in ...

Hello everyone! My name is Michelle, starting the summer I am going to be needing a preceptor for my PMHNP program so I am on the look out for anyone who may be interested in doing so. I’m currently a MSN student at Duke. Our program is both distance based and in-person for specific workshops/evaluations. Previous to being a psych nurse I was working in critical care (PICU). I’m currently working as a psych nurse in a hospital on the west side in Los Angeles that primarily caters to underserved populations. There are only a couple of NPs/psych MDs that I would want to model my future work after- and they are consequently already swamped with students until ...

A 2023 Hospital National Patient Safety Goal is to reduce the risk of suicide (The Joint Commission, 2022). Suicide is a tragedy that affects the entire world and all levels of society. It does not discriminate against race, religion, sexuality, wealth, or education. In the hospital many patients are overlooked because they do not present as a psychiatric patient. There are several interventions that we can do to reach this goal. Health Care Providers (HCP) must do a better job screening and identifying patients that are at risk for suicide. We also need to improve our interpersonal relationship skills to build trusting relationships with patients and make suicide ...
