APNA President's Message from Mary Moller
As I write my first article for the newsletter it has been eight weeks since our most successful annual conference ever and the holiday season is upon us. Over 1000 psychiatric nurses from 46 states (including AK & HI), the District of Columbia, Canada, Australia, Israel, Japan, Lebanon and the UK gathered October 13-16, 2009 in the historic city of Charleston, SC. Conference attendees participated in more than 80 presentations and earned up to 29.

President's Message
My theme as APNA President is advocacy—each and every one of us needs to become an advocate for our specialty. For many, advocacy simply means an active engagement in dialogue with governmental legislators and regulators. While this is true, it is only the tip of the iceberg.

President's Message
This is a very exciting time for APNA as we prepare to celebrate our 25th anniversary at the Annual Conference in Anaheim this October. The first APNA conference I attended was in Philadelphia in 1995. I recall the thrill of meeting exemplary psychiatric nursing leaders who had authored the textbooks and journal articles that shaped my thinking about what it means to be a psychiatric nurse and who had created and sustained a vision of psychiatric mental health nursing that continues today.

President's Message
I was recently reminded of our pioneering history when I opened a psychiatric nursing textbook authored by Madeline Leininger, Basic Concepts in Psychiatric Nursing (1960), and read the following introduction: “The patient centered approach is a shift from ‘doing to’ to a focus on understanding the patient, his/her problems, illness and other factors that have a bearing on his or her progress toward recovery.” The current national health care agenda incorporates health promotion, patient-centered care, and recovery - Psychiatric mental health nursing established the primacy of these concepts over fifty years ago! Member Profile: Sue Brammer, A Story of Recovery
When I was thinking about recovery and how it has impacted my nursing practice, I came across a definition attributed to William Anthony (1993) from the Boston Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation. There is a line in that definition which really spoke to me: “It [recovery] is a way of living a satisfying, hopeful, and contributing life even with limitations caused by the illness.

President's Message: Happy Nurses Week!
If you missed the President's special Nurses Week message, here it is! My President’s Message usually focuses on psychiatric mental health nursing because of course, that’s what we do. For Nurses Week however, it seems appropriate to remember that we, as psychiatric mental health nurses, are first and foremost nurses. Every year National Nurses Week begins on National Nurses Day, May 6th, and ends on Florence Nightingale’s birthday, May 12th.

President's Message
I am very pleased to report that APNA is currently experiencing unparalleled successes in the number and quality of national initiatives, educational programs, and member participation in committees and councils. If you were measuring our success on quantity, you would see a record number of: attendees at the previous APNA Annual Conference and Clinical Psychopharmacology Institute; abstract proposals submitted for review by our Scholarly Review Committee for the upcoming APNA 25th Annual Conference in Anaheim, CA; nominations for open positions on the APNA Board of Directors and Nominating Committee in this year’s elections process; and solicited requests for feedback by a growing number of national organizations. These accomplishments show the robustness of our association and its membership.

President's Message
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours! Time is really flying by as we approach the holiday season - it seems like just yesterday that many of us were together in “the happiest place on earth.” Our conference at Disneyland® in Anaheim, California was a rousing success and it was with true delight that I had the opportunity to meet so many of you. Nothing can compare to the electrifying and inspiring enthusiasm that is generated when over a thousand psychiatric mental health nurses gather in one place to learn from each other and celebrate our profession! President's Message
Happy New Year! Time is flying by and I’m pleased to report that 2012 is starting out strong for us at APNA.
In a few weeks the APNA Board of Directors will be meeting to discuss our biggest agenda item currently on the table - revising APNA’s strategic plan. The strategic plan is what guides the association - setting out specific goals and ways to achieve those goals - and in a broader sense it defines the envisioned future of APNA.
