Announcing the new JAPNA Editor
Michelle DeCoux Hampton

Michelle DeCoux Hampton selected Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (JAPNA)

Informed by the JAPNA Editor Search Committee’s search and interview process, the APNA Board of Directors has appointed Michelle DeCoux Hampton, RN, PhD, MS as the incoming Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association.

Hampton, who will begin as editor on January 1, 2025, has been Associate Editor of the journal since September 2022. She is currently Associate Dean of Operations and Partnerships at Samuel Merritt University and has been a peer reviewer for JAPNA since 2009. She is also the recipient of the 2023 Excellence in Nursing Award in Research and Scholarship, Sigma Theta Tau International, Nu Xi At-Large Chapter.

“I am so excited for this opportunity to lead the Journal of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association,” Hampton says. “I am passionate about psychiatric-mental health care improvement, research, and writing. I am also passionate about JAPNA, and I look forward to continuing that work and growing the collaborations I’ve made.”

The search committee’s extensive process included surveys of APNA members and leadership to discover the qualities most valued in the publication and its editor. These insights, as well as intensive candidate reviews and interviews, led the committee to recommend Hampton as our next JAPNA Editor-in-Chief.

APNA President Lora Peppard, PhD, DNP, PMHNP-BC is thrilled to welcome Hampton to the role. “Michelle brings a unique knowledge and skillset for scholarly writing and mentoring to JAPNA. This includes a desire to support authors in critical areas related to manuscript submission and revision. She has an inclusive vision for the journal across all touchpoints including authors, reviewers, and the editorial board. We feel confident that the leadership of our journal will be in capable and nurturing hands.”

The Journal of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (JAPNA) is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal that publishes research and clinical articles on psychiatric-mental health nursing six times a year. It is available in print and online subscriptions and is complimentary to APNA members.

On behalf of the APNA Board of Directors, congratulations to Dr. Hampton, and thank you to the members of the JAPNA Editor Search Committee for its outstanding work in this search.
