Transforming Passion into Profession – Where are the BOD Scholars now?

Transforming Passion into Profession – Where are the BOD Scholars now?
LaTonia Clark Chalmers attended the APNA Annual Conference in October 2025. Chalmers, a former recipient of the APNA Board of Directors Scholarship, is now transforming her passion into profession.

The APNA Board of Directors Student Scholarship allows nursing students to gain valuable exposure to the psychiatric-mental health nursing profession and kick-start their leadership development.

Why do these scholarships matter?
Past BOD recipients have found themselves in their dream careers, paving the way for other PMH nurses, filling leadership roles, connecting with their heroes, and inspiring a generation of nurses.

From scholarship to success:
APNA North Carolina Chapter President LaTonia Clark Chalmers, DNP, APRN, PMHNP-BC, APHN-BC, NC-BC, RYT-200 is a 2023 BOD Student Scholar. Post scholarship, she has found herself following her passions and fulfilling her dreams. LaTonia’s journey proves the power of seizing opportunities that can shape your career.

LaTonia says:

“In 2022 and during my APNA BOD video clip, I shared about my dream job of partnering with faith-based organizations to support mental health and well-being in community settings. Since that time, I have completed Adult and Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) instructor training and have had the privilege of starting to live out my dream via volunteering time to teach Youth MHFA to rural African American faith-based leaders. These trainings are vital to building mental health literacy, decreasing mental health-related stigma, and supporting the ability of these leaders to respond to the mental health needs of their congregants and community members.

As someone who was raised in a rural faith-based setting, being in partnership and fellowship with these faith leaders brings me great joy and fills me up! I am deeply grateful that APNA gave me the platform and encouragement to speak my dream into existence, and I am thrilled to serve the community in this way.”
