Nick this is awesome. What a wonderful experience for you. I like that they spoke of "psych nurses" so respectfully - that is very validating. We are on a campaign at my hospital regarding stigma reducation and misperceptions about those impacted by mental illness. These resources you provided will be very helpful. Thank you for doing a fabulous job and representing APNA in a remarkable way.

Hi Nick, Thank you for representing mental health nurses at the conference. I read all the APNA resource section, which is devoted to providing accurate and recovery-focused information, tools, education and more and find it to be very well-developed and engaging. It is easy to find a section and resource for providers, recovering and reintegrating individuals, families, and communities in mental health. I wish APNA all the best in the coming years as we continue our work to eliminate stigma and disrespect toward people and families suffering to regain control of their thoughts, feelings, and behavior.

This is great news!! Thank you Nick for representing the organization. We can make a difference if every nurse assumes the responsibility of taking a more active role in educating people in the community about mental illness. This would help to reduce the stigma.

Improving Mental Health Care: Reducing Stigma of Mental Illness: by Emphasizing Prevention A key factor in improving mental health care for Americans with mental illness is increasing accessibility of appropriate care that will aid them in moving toward recovery. Among the obstructions to appropriate care, stigma has a far reaching impact. Stigma fosters prejudice, discrimination, and exclusion and is associated with mistrust and fear. One approach to reducing the public’s fear of mental illness is to challenge their belief that mental illness is a mysterious affliction that comes out of the blue. Americans need to be made aware of the fact that each of the mental illnesses has risk factors and protective factors and that preventive interventions can reduce the chances of developing a mental illness. (Perese, 2012, Chapter 19). In fact Dutch researchers, Beekman, Cuijpers, van Marwijk, et al. (2006), say that the rate of new cases could be reduced by at least 25% by the use of preventive interventions. Nurses have always believed that educating the public about the prevention of illness is part of their professional role. Now it is time for psychiatric nurses to take the lead in educating the public and policy makers about the prevention of mental illnesses. Beekman, A. T., Cuijpers, P., van Marwijk, H. W., et al. (2006). The prevention of psychiatric disorders. Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde, 150(8), 419-423. Perese, E. (2012). Chapter 19: Prevention of Psychiatric Disorders. In: Psychiatric Advanced Practice Nursing: A Biopsychosocial Foundation for Practice (pp. 641-692. Philadelphia: F. A. Davis Company

Nick that was great that you attended the conference. Watching it at home I was struck with the emphasis on innovative outreach approaches that involve the community and the emphasis on military/school issues.
