APNA Immediate Past President Position Description

The Immediate Past President serves as a voting member of the board and an ex officio, non-voting member of the nominating committee and performs such other duties as may be prescribed by the board from time to time. Each Past President of APNA shall receive complimentary membership (pay no dues) for their lifetime.

TERM

Serves one year as Immediate Past President.

DUTIES

In addition to the responsibilities of all members of the Board, the Immediate Past President:
  • Serves as a mentor to the President and President-Elect
  • Serves as ex officio non-voting member on the nominating committee and assists in identifying prospective qualified candidates
  • Mentors current members of the board and prospective leaders
  • Represents the association as required
  • In collaboration with the executive director, models the partnership philosophy between board and staff
  • Travels to APNA board meetings, annual conference and other APNA or allied organization meetings as may be required.
  • Maintains a current knowledge of global trends and developments influencing APNA and all APNA programs, products and services
  • Avoids conflicts of interest and promptly notifies the executive director if a potential conflict arises. Avoiding conflicts of interest for the President, President-Elect, and Immediate Past President involves pausing pre-existing individual relationships with industry (any entity whose primary business is producing, marketing, selling, re-selling, or distributing healthcare products used by or on patients).

QUALIFICATIONS

(This position is an automatic succession so all qualifications of President apply)

  • Must be a voting member in good standing
  • Willingness to commit the time and skills necessary to fulfill the expectations of the role.
  • Ability to set and maintain high standards for personal performance
  • Knowledge about global trends and issues influencing the association and the association’s programs, projects and services
  • Experience with strategic planning and budgeting
  • Understanding of financial statements and comparisons
  • Understanding of applicable operating ratios and ability to evaluate the association’s performance relative to association standards
  • Excellent written, oral communication and presentation skills
  • Informal and formal leadership experience
  • Participative leadership style
  • Demonstrated problem solving and ethical decision making experience
  • Excellent time management and organization skills
  • Conflict resolution and negotiation skills
