Building Your Poster Presentation
Basic guidelines and resources for content, printing, and permissions.
As a presenter, you have a critical opportunity to counter stigma and bias through the use of person-first, recovery-focused language. Here are examples of simple and practical ways to reframe the conversation:
Rather than… | Use… |
Schizophrenic, Bipolar Person, Depressive, etc. | Person with [diagnosis] |
Refused treatment | Declined treatment |
Resisted | Chose not to |
Client believes that… | Client stated that… |
Delusional | Experiencing delusional thoughts |
Paranoid | Experiencing paranoid thoughts |
Decompensate | Experience an increase in symptoms |
Manipulative | Seeking alternative methods of meeting needs |
Noncompliant | Not in agreement with treatment plan |
Unmotivated | Had not begun |
Suffering from… | Has a history of… |
Low functioning | Has difficulty with… |
Here are two examples of past APNA poster presentations that you can use as models:

You’re not required to use these or any other template(s) for your poster.
When you submit your poster with your program materials, it will be reviewed by an APNA nurse educator to ensure that it meets requirements for ANCC nursing continuing professional development contact hours. Keep in mind that any posters that contain images/content without appropriate permissions or citations will not be included in poster judging or in the online poster gallery.
